@igob8a – I take it you don’t own an iPhone… or you would know why.

@AhwatukeeAl She measured four resistors, so I’m guessing they’re being used in voltage divider configurations to set the voltage levels placed on the D- and D+ lines. It would be more complicated (and more expensive) for the iPhone to measure impedance values rather than just run straight voltages into an ADC.

@ryanstewart86 : I suspect what she meant was sustainable current. These are probably alkaline batteries, and so does not handle high currents very well, an AAA cell discharged at a few tens of mA may have 1,2 Ah of energy, but discharge the same at 500mA, and it may be dead in less than an hour, so it has less than 500mAh at that current. 1A wouldn’t be viable for long.

There are other chemistries out there, but these are much more expensive and not as widely available as the alkaline ones.

    Very helpful info, thanks

    Hakko is the best

  • igob8a:

Why can’t greedy apple use standardized connectors and make batteries removable like every single other mobile phone?

  • thenerdal:

I wish there were girls in my school like you. ):

  • ryanstewart86:

uhh a fresh AAA battery can output about 10A no load and at only 1.5v it can output more than 1A

  • AhwatukeeAl:

Pretty good video but I’m a little confused. You discuss voltage levels and resistor values interchangeably. Are you sure the iPhone is sensing only voltage levels? How about impedance? I know that if I plug my iPhone into certain iPod chargers, it recognizes the fact and tells me the charger will charge the phone but I will not be able to use the phone while it’s plugged in!

    Damn you smart girl!!!
I only understand how a flashlight runs on batteries, you rock!

  • OfficerMike07:

Any chance that the schematics for these chargers on the FCC website might include resistor values?

  • killerman4ever:

This isn’t anything secret phillebeau, those companies can also just disassemble these chargers.

  • phillebeau:

    @Raxarax fuck apple

  • Raxarax:

What are you doing! dont you know that ONLY apple products are to be used with apple products!? you’re going against everything apple stands for!

  • deadking13:

    Great work! :)

  • killerman4ever:

Hhhahah, it’s all so secret at Apple…NOT.
