The answers will define the foundations of your offshore outsourcing engagement. We have found that a start-up typically commences an offshore initiative almost as soon as the business plan and prototypes

are validated. To build a product takes a lot of muscle—from conception to architecting, marketing, and selling, where each component is a big cost initiative to the company, not only in terms of direct dollar costs, but also in terms of management bandwidth. Even as the company spends front-end cycles delighting the first reference customers, the next solid version of the product has to be  simultaneously built for the next set of customers. Here is where the companies come up against a dilemma—how will they build out the product and not miss the market window, while spending as much local engineering bandwidth as possible to make the reference customer implementations a grand success? This is a good instance where a specialized offshore product engineering services partner can bring tremendous value.

To evaluate the reason for offshore, many list cost and convenience as valid reasons. While these are true, time could be the most important element since time-to-market can determine the success or failure of a software venture. Marathon Rules:

1. Ensure that the outsourcer is a product engineering specialist rather than an IT generalist: product engineering entails a mindset wholly different from IT support. The rules of the game change almost every day, and the services firm should bring a talent pool and the gene pool that understands and adapts to these vagaries with aplomb, and still deliver flawlessly. The interaction with the U.S. team will be intense, and the team should be able to understand the bigger, customer-centric vision of the problem and solution. For IT projects, customers are internal, which results in limited specification vagaries. Products are conceived with a certain customer use profile in mind, thus creating very high levels of changes in specifications, priorities and even technologies. To cope up with these changes and still deliver the output, the offshore team needs to have the right experience. Flexibility is the key for successful product engineering.

2. Treat the relationship as a partnership than as a client-vendor relationship. Treat the outsourcing team members as your own employees: when teams on the other side of the world understand your dreams and ambitions, the energies are different, and the commitment to solve the same problems that you intend to is of high importance. If you treat the partner as a vendor, the team will just work to your orders, and not contribute valuable experience that it may have gained from other engagements. In a typical product cycle, one never knows when one needs to draw on that “superhuman” effort from some members of the team. The chances of counting on that one extra stride are much more when the offshore team members feel the involvement.

3. Start small with maintenance-oriented activities before a full-fledged development: as with any nascent process, time, training and hands-on problem solving experience are the keys to accelerate the learning curve. At the beginning of the engagement the offshore team may not be fully aware of the product to run you a full functional testing plan. But if the engagement begins with some maintenance and enhancement tasks, it gives the partner firm time and scope to learn the product better, thereby able to engage better with time.

4. Choose your partner using a pilot project evaluation rather than from an RFP process: as the saying goes, anybody can write a good RFP response, but that does not mean that you will be able to choose the right partner from the responses. Take a closer look and you will find that most responses simply copy out your RFP just so they fill in the check boxes for our selection. A pilot project will involve effort, but pays off in the long run when you decide to choose a partner.

5. Hire for the job: If the outsourced work does not involve mainstream development, do not insist the partner provide the best and the brightest of their talent pool. The top class talent may not like the non-development work and will create attrition problems very soon. As the nature of the engagement evolves, the right partner can always bring in the right talent.

6. Delegate the project management: At least the people management should be in control of the outsourcer. They are on the ground there. The engineering leadership in the U.S. may tend to insist on full control on the project, which involves hiring, firing and day-today management—all of which will become distasteful issues with time. In many successful engagements we have seen than the involvement in these tasks is significantly higher at the beginning of the engagement, but the US company’s detailed involvement successively tapers down as the US based management develops more and more confidence in their offshore counterparts. It is important that this gradual transfer of control should be planned at the outset.

7. Focus on the team’s ability to deliver rather than choosing a group of technology savvy individuals, who do not operate as a team: the right partner firm will know best about putting the right team for you—choosing talent, experience, team effort and so on. Allow them the benefit of choice, and you will have a team that is far more responsive to your needs.

8. Ensure that the U.S. team begins following some engineering processes. Most start-ups scratch up a requirement document on the whiteboard, and the U.S. team, where the team members work in adjoining cubicles, will work very easily off such a rough transcript. Getting productivity out of a remote team working in a totally opposite time zone is much more complex than “over the wall” management. If you do not have a process, invite the partner firm to set up one for you. It will ease your managing the engagement vastly in the course of time. Again, one should never advocate a full blown SEI-CMM or ISO level processes for a startup. However, the discipline of creating specification-architecture design documents and critically reviewing the plans, documents and code created by the offshore team, both in a timely manner, is minimally necessary to ensure higher success.

9. Insist on weekly project meetings and monthly business review meetings in addition to the ad-hoc daily communications. Weekly meetings can bring milestones, schedules, issues, changes, and goals at a tactical level in front of the project teams, while the monthly meetings can focus on larger issues like company goals, directions, and plans. These help glue the offshore and onsite teams in a more powerful manner—especially if you can enable a video conference and meet up virtually.

10. Incorporate a certain resource slack in the overall project budget. The US startups are forced to work with almost no resource slack because of the resource costs. However, in case of offshore teams, the chances of encountering some unforeseen situations, either people-wise or infrastructure-wise, are much higher, which could impact  productivity and schedules. Since the offshore resources typically cost substantially less than the US resources, keeping a little resource slack is a very prudent way of doing things.

What exactly is RTMP and its classifications?

RTMP (Real Time Messaging Protocol)

RTMP is a TCP based propriety protocol developed by Adobe System for the purpose of streaming Audio/Video data between Flash Player and media server.

RTMPT (Real Time Messaging Protocol with Tunnel)

RTMPT is a variation of RTMP which works behind the firewall as well. It works on Port 80 and encapsulate the RTMP data in HTTP request.

RTMPS (Real Time Messaging Protocol Secure)

RTMPS is again a variation of RTMP which works over secure HTTPS connection.

RTMPE (Real Time Messaging Protocol with Encryption)

RTMPE is a new 128 bit encrypted protocol developed by Adobe systems for securing the stream data between flash client and server. It’s lightweight than SSL. It’s a DRM solution from Adobe for flash.

RTMPTE (Real Time Messaging Protocol with Encryption and Tunnel)

RTMPTE is a RTMPE tunneling over HTTP on port 80.

MRTMP (Multiplex Real Time Messaging Protocol)

Multiplex RTMP is a protocol between edge and origin, developed by Red5 for clustering of stream data using Terracotta.

How does RTMP operate?

The raw TCP-based RTMP maintains a single persistent connection and allows real-time communication. To guarantee smooth delivery of video and audio streams, while still maintaining the ability to transmit bigger chunks of information, the protocol may split video and data into fragments. The size of the fragments used can be negotiated dynamically between the client and server, and even disabled completely if desired, although the default fragment sizes are 128 bytes for video and most other data types, and 64-bytes for audio data. Fragments from different streams may then be interleaved and multiplexed over a single connection. With longer data chunks, the protocol would then only carry a one-byte header per fragment, thus incurring very little overhead. In practice however, individual fragments are not typically interleaved. Instead, the interleaving and multiplexing is done at the packet level, with RTMP packets across several different active channels being interleaved in such a way to ensure that each channel meets its bandwidth, latency, and other quality of service requirements. Packets interleaved in this fashion are treated as indivisible, and are not interleaved on the fragment level.

The RTMP defines several channels on which packets may be sent/received, and which operate independently of each other. During a typical RTMP session, several channels may be active simultaneously at any given time. When RTMP data is packetized, a packet header is generated. The packet header specifies, among other things, the id of the channel that it is to be sent on, the timestamp at which is was generated (if necessary), and the size of the packet payload. This is then followed by the packet payload, which is fragmented according to the currently agreed-upon fragment size before it is serialized over the connection. The packet header itself is never fragmented, and its size does not count towards the data in the packet’s first fragment. In other words, only the actual packet payload data is subject to fragmentation.

What players support RTMP?

The most well-known RTMP client is Adobe’s Flash Player which can stream video and audio from RTMP servers. Besides, the open source media player XBMC has acquired preliminary support for playing RTMP streams in its SVN version. Recently, Moyea Web Player version 2.0 with the RTMP Stream Plugin supports the playback of live streaming videos, SMIL presentations, and streaming videos from RTMP servers. Besides, JW Player and Flow Player supports RTMP as well.

What is RTMP server software?

Currently, the only full implementation RTMP servers are the Adobe Flash Media Server, Onlinelib VCS Video Communication Server (including iPhone Support), Wowza Media Server and WebORB Integration Server (free and available for .NET, Java and ColdFusion) both commercial and closed source implementations.

There is a reverse engineered open source project called Red5 which aims to produce a feature-complete implementation written in Java. As of October 2007, the majority of the functionality is implemented, although the project is still in the beta stage. OneTeam Media Server has also been announced by ProcessOne.

Wireframes & prototypes didn´t use to be a priority  for IT professionals. But as the IT industry develops, it becomes essential to build websites or apps on solid foundations. Here comes a non-exhaustive list of why we should all be using wireframes and prototypes more often.

We speak different languages

Imagine an English developer having to explain a future website to his client, a chinese businessman… I think this speaks for itself. But we don´t need get to such extremes, the very same word can have different meanings for people that speak the same language. But simply because they have different backgrounds they won´t intend the same things behind a common concept.

We need to visual the future product

An image is worth a 1000 words! This is actually why we wireframe in the first place (and incidentally, reading all the specs doc of a future website is a pain, I wonder how many actually do it). Even if it´s only a sketchy wireframe, at least everybody sees where is what and how it looks like.

Clear up your ideas

Get things clear! Wireframes and prototypes help you to organise and share your idea avoiding misunderstanding. You´ll see what´s possible and what´s not.

Save time (it´s quick)

Because with a prototype in hands, you know what to expect as a final outpout. Hence prototyping will save you time during development and avoids rework being done too. A prototype is also quickly shared & commented among collegues and you can apply ongoing changes to it so you see in real-time what´s being done.

… and money (it´s cheap)

Time is money, everybody knows it! Whether it´s on conception, design or development, saving time most certainly means less man-month! Plus, the whole point of a prototype is to save time, so it´s usually developed using cheaper & easier technologies than the one that will be used for the final product.

Anyone can do it

No need to be a high-profile developer to do a prototype. Actually, it´s quite the opposite. If you want to build a good user interface, you might want to ask a UX designer, or designer to build what usually a simple HTML prototype. Moreover, with high-fidelity prototyping softwares, everybody can create fully functional prototypes without a single line of coding.

Run user testing before development

This is probably the main advantage of prototyping! Prototyping the UI of a website or an app lets you carry out user tests before developing the final thing. This is also a big difference between functional prototypes and static wireframes, as the latest doesn’t allow you to do this.

All in all, although wireframes are very useful when it comes to define and analyse a website or an application, these arguments shows that it´s best to prototype. Prototyping will “fluidifies” all processes of any IT project, from design to development and testing. With RIA & dynamic websites the need for prototyping will be increasingly present.

If you are currently selling plastic and lenticular printing as your main product offering, branch out and expand your product offering to including paper printing, digital printing, direct mail services and any other product and service your company has to offer.  You can increase your customer base by being a “One Stop Shop” for an entire line of products and services.  Use the same networking channels and marketing actions to cross-sell and establish your credibility of knowledge with other print products and services.  Cross-sell to your existing client base as well to increase your sales dollars.  You already have these customers on your side so half the work is already done.

3.  Manage your time daily

It is easy to let your day slip away especially when focusing on new personal marketing and sales goals.  Create a daily plan of action at the end of each day to carry out the following day.  Mix up the action items into categories that include more generalized action items and very specific action items.  Establish a hierarchy of importance for these action items.  For instance, action items that must be done today and action items that need to be done today with time permitting.  Also establish a time frame to spend on each action item to keep your time in check.  By doing this, at the end of the day you will feel like you have accomplished some of your daily goals.  Besides listing your action times into columns of must get done today versus getting done today if time permits, also list in each column your action items that are necessary to maintain existing business versus action items that will allow you to grow your sales with new business.  This can include joining new groups, participating in group discussions or sending a group email to your existing clients announcing a new printing product.  Keep a good balance of action items that will maintain your existing client base as well as grow your sales.

4.  Keep up to date on new technology and industry trends and changes

It is always a good idea to stay current on new technology related to commercial printing.  This can relate to computer software for database management and pre-press graphics and/or printing and press equipment that is changing or enhancing industry products (new digital equipment).  This can also be related to new materials offered by suppliers such as a less expensive lenticular lens that produces extreme depth of graphics.  It may also be a recyclable paper that is considered more “green” and favored by many customers.  Just another positive talking point to be able to use in your arsenal of industry knowledge and product offerings as trends happen and customers want the latest and greatest.

5.  Fill in the gaps of your marketing by keeping in contact with existing clients and taking advantage of any other form of marketing your company has to offer its sales people

Stay connected to your existing client database by sending group emails asking them to join you on some of these social sites.  This will give your existing clients an opportunity to engage in some of the group discussions that you are involved in.  Thus, being another reinforcement as an industry expert.  Also stay connected to clients you already have done business with by cross-selling to them (offering other products).  Let them know you have these other products and services available.  Keeping connected with your existing customers on a regular basis via a group email will show them their business is important to you.  You will be able to manage your time more efficiently because you will have answered some of their questions in this group email rather than having to answer multiple individual emails.  Who knows, your customers may enjoy, look forward to and even be expecting the next group email you send them with top tips, industry trends and the latest news you have to offer.  If your company spends money on traditional forms of marketing channels and sends leads your way, follow up on these free leads right away.
